UNEP launches Young Environmental Journalist Award

NAIROBI: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is launching a new award called the Young Environmental Journalist Award Africa. Radio, television, print and online journalists aged 25-35 years from any African country may apply. Applications from female journalists are strongly encouraged.

The award is made possible through funding support from the US government. The prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to the USA, where the winner will follow a specially-designed 'green itinerary', interacting with environmental projects, green economy projects, scientists and public figures.

Submission requirements

Journalists entering the award may submit one radio, television, print or online report (in English or French) on an environmental issue. Written articles must not exceed 3000 words and radio or television reports should be no longer than six minutes.

An independent jury will select the winner. The award ceremony will take place during the 26th Session of the UNEP Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 21-25 February 2011.

Journalists should apply via the award website www.unep.org/yeja before 31 December 2010. Terms and conditions are available on the website.
